It is with great pride that the Psychologists in Long Term Care
(PLTC) have sponsored The Professional Educational Long-Term Care
Training Manual, and now its second iteration, Geropsychology and
Long Term Care: A Practitioner's Guide. Education of psychologists
working in long-term care settings is consistent with PLTC's
mission to assure the provision of high-quality psychological
services for a neglected sector of the population, i.e., residents
in nursing homes and assisted-living communities. To this end,
direct training of generalist psychologists in the nuances of
psychological care delivery in long-term care settings has been a
major priority. It is a tribute to the accelerating nature of
research in long-term care settings that a revision is now
necessary. After all, the Professional Educational Training
Manual's initial publication date was only in 2001. However, in the
intervening years, much progress has been made in addressing
assessment and intervention strategies tailored to the needs of
this frail but quite diverse population. It is so gratifying to be
able to say that there is now a corpus of scientific knowledge to
guide long-term care service delivery in long-term care settings.
This book explores new criteria and characteristics for integrating
human psychology in the design of modern urban lighting. It
identifies a new area of lighting design research and practice that
focuses on the nocturnal urban experience in terms of people's
emotional, cognitive and motivational perceptions to achieve more
accessible, sociable and sustainable cities. In turn, the book
compares new tools and research methodologies for tackling complex
issues concerning the ties between lighting, people and the city.
Moreover, it presents a series of case studies to provide an
in-depth understanding of the influence of urban lighting in terms
of luminous atmosphere perception, positive social affect, social
enhancement, accessibility and hospitability. Lastly, the book
proposes a multidisciplinary qualitative and quantitative
methodology for assessing the spatial experience of outdoor
lighting.
Labics, based in Rome, is a leader among Italy's up-and-coming
architecture firms and has gained great international acclaim for
submissions to competitions and a number of realised projects. This
first-ever monograph on Labic's fast growing, impressive body of
work features some twenty of their designs, representing the entire
range of the firm's achievements. The selection comprises housing
and office buildings, museums and cultural centres, schools, public
spaces, and subway stations, located in Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Finland, Iran, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and the UK. All
are documented with atmospheric photographs and a wealth of plans
and diagrams to illustrate the concept and many details of each
project. Structure, in a variety of notions of the term, is guiding
Labic's approach. Consequently, the book is arranged in five
chapters exploring geometric, bearing, circulation, public space,
and urban and territorial structures in topical essays. This
provides the frame for the featured projects, all of which
exemplify the importance of the respective type of structure for
Labic's work.
This Handbook represents an innovative response to the trend toward
increased medical complexity in nursing home patients, and to the
demand for greater behavioral health collaboration in their
treatment plans. It is a portable reference guide for health care
professionals who want to understand the recommended
cognitive-behavioral approaches for the co-morbid psychological
issues impacting medical conditions in nursing facilities,
including diabetes, respiratory disease, obesity and chronic pain,
and diagnoses requiring rehabilitation, such as stroke and
fractures. An array of assessment measures are discussed, and
cognitive-behavioral treatment protocols are reviewed for twelve
acute and chronic medical conditions. This Handbook will serve as
an indispensable tool to help patients mentally manage their
disabling medical conditions.

An exquisitely crafted, large format volume featuring new and
previously unpublished artwork by legendary architect Thom Mayne,
principal of Morphosis Architects. Strange Networks debuts a new
body of artwork and studies by Pritzker Prize-winning architect
Thom Mayne. Emerging from the same interests that shape the design
philosophy of his internationally renowned architecture firm
Morphosis, the works explore the tension between organizational
systems and chance behavior, between the manual and digital, and
between individual and collective authorship. Reproduced in
exquisite detail, the intricate lithographic prints and digitally
derived sculptural works--or "drawdels" for how they combine the
notion of drawing and modelling--embody a search for forms and
methods resonant with our contemporary state of instability and
hyper-connection. With a foreword by Thom Mayne and essays by
Stefano Casciani, Sir Peter Cook, Craig Hodgetts, and Frederic
Migayrou.
This is the first English translation of II Fiore, the late
thirteenth-century narrative poem in 232 sonnets based on the Old
French Roman de la Rose, and the of Detto d'Amore, a free-wheeling
version of many Ovidian precepts of love in 240 rhymed couplets.
The elaborate allegory of the Fiore presents the complex
workings of love, understood primarily as carnal passion, in the
human psyche through the use of personifications of a wide array df
characters who engage in various social (and bellic) interactions.
There are personifications of social stereotypes (Lover, Old Woman,
Friend), mythological figures (God of Love, Venus, Nature),
abstract qualities (Reason, Honor, Beauty, Mercy), material and
existential indicators (Wealth, Youth), psychological and physical
states (Fear, Resistance, Pain, Jealousy), personality and
character traits (Sincerity, Modesty, Fair Welcome, Fair
Appearance, Bad Mouth), and societal characteristics and attitudes
(Forced Abstinence, Extravagance).
The Detto d'Amore includes features of the perennial controversy
between proponents of the pleasures of erotic passion and those who
counsel pursuit of the sublime joys found solely in the exercise of
reason. The incomplete poem also contains a conventionalized -- and
idealized -- description of the physical traits of the lady, as
well as a portrait of the perfect courtly lover.
The importance of these two works lies in part on their possible
attribution to the great Florentine poet Dante Alighieri. But even
if Dante is not the author, the Fiore is a valuable witness to the
literary taste and cultural concerns of medieval Italy and to
matters of poetic influence and reception among different
literarytraditions.
